The Church Planting Residency at McLean Bible Church (MBC) is an intensive, supervised ministry experience focused on developing the core competencies of planting a church. MBC is a church with over 15,000 weekly attendees, located just outside of Washington, DC. In 2015, MBC launched a church planting network, called New City Network, which currently partners with over 50 church plants and are primarily located in the greater DC area.
We are seeking qualified candidates to participate in a 12-month church planting residency cohort. Six to eight residents are selected each year to serve at MBC, or another church local church plant, for 12 months, while receiving weekly training specifically focused on the work of church planting. During the residency, the planter will refine a strategic and contextualized vision of planting a local church, work to develop communication strategies for casting the vision, engage in active fundraising and partner development, and develop a strong core team that will endeavor to maintain the long term health and vitality of the church.
During the training we will focus on 12 primary characteristics that are essential to a successful church planter:
3. Missional Engagement
5. Bold Faith
9. Systems and Structures
10. Team Building
11. Communication and Preaching
The ideal candidate will have (1) a vibrant personal walk with the Lord, (2) be a man of demonstrated godly character, (3) have a strong calling to the work of church planting, (4) a passion for reaching the unchurched and de-churched, (5) a strong marriage and family life, (6) demonstrated success in leading and building ministries, (7) a gifted communicator, (8) an entrepreneurial aptitude and a track record of starting ministries and/or businesses from scratch, (9) theological clarity and alignment with the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, (10) a kingdom mindset that will seek the welfare of the greater movement of church planting in the city, (11) a desire for multiplication and to plant a church-planting church.
New City Network has partnered with the North American Mission Board (NAMB) in their church planting efforts in Washington DC and Baltimore, and utilizes NAMB’s assessment process for the determination of the cohort participants. Potential residents will go through NAMB’s church planter application process and assessment as part of the application process for this residency.
