Army Chaplain Job Description


  1. Religious Support and Counseling:
  • Conduct religious services, ceremonies, and sacraments for soldiers and their families.
  • Provide spiritual counseling, crisis intervention, and moral guidance.
  • Offer confidential pastoral care for service members experiencing personal, ethical, or family issues.

  1. Advisory Role:
  • Advise commanders on religious accommodation, morale, and ethical issues.
  • Assess the spiritual health of units and provide guidance on faith-based support programs.
  • Develop strategies for promoting religious tolerance and diversity.


  1. Training and Education:


  • Lead training sessions on ethical decision-making, suicide prevention, and conflict resolution.
  • Educate soldiers on stress management, resilience, and family support resources.
  • Facilitate religious education classes for various faith traditions.
  1. Operational Support:

  • Deploy with units to provide spiritual and emotional support during missions.
  • Conduct memorial services, funerals, and rites of passage.
  • Ensure religious services are available in combat and field environments.


  1. Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain records of religious services, counseling sessions, and unit activities.
  • Coordinate with Religious Program Specialists (RPs) to manage logistics and resources.
  • Develop and submit reports on religious program activities and assessments.


  1. Community Outreach:


  • Collaborate with local religious organizations to support service members and their families.
  • Organize volunteer programs, charity drives, and community events.


  1. Personal and Professional Development:

  • Attend ongoing training and certification programs to maintain chaplaincy credentials.
  • Stay informed about Army policies, procedures, and religious accommodation guidelines



Qualifications


  1. Education:
  • Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or equivalent graduate-level theological degree from an accredited institution.


  1. Denominational Endorsement:
  • Official endorsement from a recognized religious organization or denomination. Must maintain good standing.


  1. Military Experience:


  • Prior military service is beneficial but not required. Must complete the Chaplain Basic Officer Leadership Course.


  1. Pastoral Experience:

  • Minimum of two years in pastoral leadership, religious education, or chaplaincy.


  1. Volunteer Work:

  • Community outreach, crisis intervention, or counseling in diverse settings.


  1. Skills and Attributes:


  • Strong interpersonal communication, counseling, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work in multicultural, interfaith, and high-stress environments.


  1. Physical and Mental Readiness:

  • Meet Army physical fitness and health standards.
